Fin dagli anni ’70, ha focalizzato il suo interesse sugli scambi interdisciplinari tra arte e scienza.

Ha fondato e coordinato numerose iniziative internazionali tra le quali: nel 1982 Plexus International a Cagliari, nel 1989 il Christopher Columbus Consortium a New York, nel 1994 il Centro Interdipartimentale “Well-Being” di Studi sulla Qualità della Vita dell'Università di Cagliari, nel 1995 il Consorzio per il Well-Being nel XXI Secolo a Roma, nel 1999 l’Associazione Plexus International Forum Onlus a Cagliari, nel 2003 il Forum sulle Culture Alimentari Mediterranee a Roma, nel 2006 il Centro Interuniversitario Internazionale per gli Studi sulle Culture Alimentari Mediterranee (CIISCAM) presso l'Università Sapienza di Roma, e nel 2014 la Fondazione Internazionale per la Dieta Mediterranea (IFMeD) a Londra.

Negli ultimi anni ha partecipato attivamente con il CIHEAM allo sviluppo dellla SFS-MED Platform.   

Nel 2014, ha ricevuto il Premio Eccellenza sulla Sostenibilità Alimentare al Terzo Congresso Mondiale  Public Health Nutrition, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, e nel 2021, il Ancel and Margaret Keys Award al Secondo Congresso Internazionale silla Agrobiodiversità.

 Dal 2019 al 2022, ha organizzato e coordinato il programa scientifico di tre Conferenze Mondiali sulla Dieta Mediterranea.

Ha pubblicato come autore o co-editore 6 libri e più di 60 articoli scientifici sulla dieta mediterranea e le diete sostenibili.

Sandro Dernini holding a Doctorate in Biology (University of Cagliari, 1974) and a Ph.D. in Art Education (New York University, 1997), he has pioneered since early 90’s transdisciplinary approaches that connect art, well‑being, Mediterranean diet, sustainable diets and sustainable food systems.

He has focused his interest on multicultural interdisciplinary exchanges between art and science.

 He has more than 30 years’ experience in the organization and the scientific coordination of international conferences, including three World Conferences, on the Revitalization of the Mediterranean diet as a sustainable diet model.

Since the 90’s, he has worked with international organizations on the topic of well-being, Mediterranean diet, sustainable food systems and sustainable diets.  He published as author 2 art books, and as co-editor 3 books on sustainable diets, and more than 60 scientific articles on the Mediterranean diet and sustainable diets.

In 2014, he received the Award of Excellence in Food Sustainability by IACON-SENC at the Third World Conference of Public Health Nutrition in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.  In 2021, he received the Ancel and Margaret Keys Award at the 2^nd International Agrobiodiversity Congress.

He co-founded and coordinated several international initiatives, such as: the International Foundation of Mediterranean Diet (IFMeD), the Forum on Mediterranean Food Cultures, the International Interuniversity Centre for Mediterranean Food Cultures Studies (CIISCAM) at the Sapienza University of Rome, the Consortium on the Well-Being in the XXI Century, the Interdepartmental Well Being Centre of the University of Cagliari, and in the last years he promoted the constitution of the SFS-MED Platform, as a multistakeholder initiative for Mediterranean sustainable food systems.
