On November 8-10 of 2002, at Agro-Food Research Center of Calabria, in Lamezia Terme, (Calabria) Italy, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy, it is organized by the Fondazione Universitas Italica the EuroMediterranean Forum FEEDING MINDS – FIGHTING HUNGER: DIALOGUES AMONG MEDITERRANEAN CIVILIZATIONS. An Euro-Mediterranean proposal for dialogue and action on reducing hunger and malnutrition and improving food security. It is held On the occasion of 2002: United Nations Year for Cultural Heritage, with the Patronage of the United Nations Information Centre-Italy and of 2002 World Food Day Italian Celebrations, with the Technical Collaboration of FAO Food and Nutrition Division, National Italian Commission for UNESCO.
The international meeting of Lamezia Terme will provide a platform for the definition of a methodological framework for the development of a joint project proposal to reinforce security in the Mediterranean region local capacities to improve nutritional well-being and household food, promoting a broader awareness on mediterranean food traditions as cultural heritage to be safeguarded and advanced as instruments in fighting food insecurity.
The iniziative is being organised as a proposal for a Euro-Mediterranean cooperation to create an international alliance to promote an active participation of young people in fighting hunger and to increase in them a greater consciousness and comprehension of the interdependent problems of hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity. Experts will participate from U.N. Organizations, European Commission, and from leading Mediterranean institutions from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Albania, Croazia, Slovenia, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. Altogether, about 80 experts in the fields of food and nutrition, nutrition education, information and communication, agriculture, teaching, and curriculum development are expected to participate.
